Using these words with your child can be a challenge if you don’t practice saying them out loud first. When it comes to discussing puberty and sex, it can be difficult to remember the right pronunciation of the words!
People with vaginas have unique sexual anatomy.
Anus: Below the vulva, faeces (poo) exits through the anus. Males also have an anus.
Bladder: The bladder is a stretchy bag that holds urine (pee) before entering the body. The urethra is the canal via which urine exits the bladder. It’s not just the females who have a bladder. The males also have a bladder.
Cervix: Opening the uterus to the vagina, or cervix, as it is commonly known. At the very top deep inside of your vagina, you’ll find it.
Clitoris: A portion of the vulva extends behind it and wraps around the vagina. The tiniest part, about the size of a pea, can be seen outside the body, hidden beneath a little bump of skin right above the urethra, where the pee comes out. When you touch it, it can feel good.
Fallopian tubes: Eggs are carried to the uterus via the fallopian tubes, which resemble cooked spaghetti.
Labia majora: The term “labia majora” refers to the outer lips surrounding the vaginal opening. These are thicker and will ultimately be covered in hair on the outside skin.
Labia minora: The inner lips that go around the opening of the vagina. In this case, they are thinner and won’t be covered by hair.
Mons pubis: The soft, rounded area above the pubic bone. It will eventually become covered in pubic hair.
Ovaries are the reproductive organs that generate eggs or ova. They are around the size of a grape in diameter.
The Rectum is a tube that stores faeces (poo) before it is pushed through the anus. Males have rectums as well.
Uterus: A muscular bag about the size of a pear. As the baby grows and stretches, it becomes a bigger space.
The urethra is a narrow tube that extends from the bladder and emerges from the vulva through a tiny opening.
The urethral opening is the small opening in the vulva through which the urethra exits the body. Between the clitoris and the vagina, you’ll find it. Also, men have a urethra opening.
Vagina: A flexible tube that connects the uterus to the outside of the body. The vulva’s opening can be felt near the bottom.
Vulva: Fold of thick skin that covers the vaginal opening. There are two parts: an outside component called the labia majora and an inner part called the labia minora.
